The analysis section of the KU Leuven department of mathematics consists of two research groups, one in classical analysis and one in functional analysis. The functional analysis group is led by profs. Gábor Szabó and Stefaan Vaes. The group consists of several PhD students and postdocs. We organize regular seminars, advanced mini-courses, etc. We have numerous international collaborations. We are part of the joint Methusalem research project in pure mathematics, so that all researchers are exposed to a broad spectrum of mathematical research.

Project

We are looking for PhD students doing research in Operator Algebras under the supervision of prof. Gábor Szabó or prof. Stefaan Vaes. The possible research topics focus on C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras, topological dynamics, ergodic theory and compact quantum groups.
 
We strive to improve the gender balance in the pure mathematics research groups and encourage female candidates to apply.

Profile

Master degree in mathematics, or equivalent, with a strong interest in research, as demonstrated by your master thesis. Master students who will obtain their master degree before the fall of 2020 can apply. All PhD students will have a limited amount of teaching duties. Therefore candidates should be fluent in English. We have three PhD positions available. For two of them, no Dutch knowledge is required. For one of them, preference will be given to applicants who speak Dutch or are willing to learn Dutch in the first year of their PhD.

Offer

We offer a four year PhD fellowship with a competitive stipend, a budget for conference participation and short research stays in other institutions, health insurance and social benefits for the PhD student and her/his accompanying partner and/or children.

File 2. CV, including information on your language proficiency in English and Dutch. Also include the names of three references. These colleagues do not have to write a reference letter now, but might be contacted by the hiring committee. Also mention the topic of your master thesis and your (tentative) graduation date. If you have any preprints or publications, also mention these. The master thesis itself and the publications themselves should not be included.
