PhD Studetnship in Low-Latency Fibre Optics Communications using Hollow Core Optical Fibres

Project description

We are looking for candidates with an interest in fibre optics and a degree or masters’ degree in physics or electronics to join us in researching the applications of brand new hollow core optical fibres developed at the University of Southampton.

The current fibre optic networks that underpin todays Internet are based on optical fibres that reached maturity almost 40 years ago. Although these fibres were considered for a long time to be the ultimate solution for optical communications, they are now reaching their capacity limits in today’s ever more data-centric world in which internet traffic globally grows annually by 20-30%, with some segments (e.g., machine-to-machine communication inside data centres) growing at a rate of 60% per annum.

At the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton (), we have been developing a new generation of optical fibres (Hollow Core Fibres, HCFs, in which light propagates in an air-filled central hole, with an artificial microstructure surrounding it to prevent light from escaping, even when the fibre is bent. HCFs are predicted to provide vastly superior properties as compared to the fibres used today in which light propagates within an ultrapure silica glass core.

There are still many challenges that need to be overcome in order to make HCFs practical for use in communications (and indeed most other sectors) and this PhD offer plans on addressing them. The PhD student will also interact with our spin off company Lumenisity Ltd., in which he/she will spend at least 3 months during the duration of the PhD.

Due to restrictions on funding of this project (which provides tax-free stipend of £ 18 000 per year), it is open to UK applicants only.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 May 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: Is available ONLY to UK students or UK residents that have spent last 3 years in the UK for other purposes than study. It covers full tuition fee and enhanced stipend of £18 000 tax-free per annum for 3.5 years.
