The Electrical Energy & Computer Architectures Electa division is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) and covers the broad spectrum of electrical energy systems and robust control of industrial systems. The development of the future smart grid is the key activity. As the largest research group on electrical energy systems in the Benelux, Electa wants to be recognized as a center-of-excellence on these topics, where fundamental research is combined with immediately and prospectively applicable solutions for the industry. Alongside this development of know-how, it is important is to share gained knowledge with the academic community, students, industry and the society as a whole. ELECTA is also co-founder of the knowledge center EnergyVille together with VITO and imec. Within the Electrical Energy & Computer Architectures (Electa) division and EnergyVille, the research team led by prof. Jef Beerten focuses on the combined modelling and control of power electronic converters and power systems, with a focus on DC systems. The group of PhD students and postdocs consists of about 7 people. Within the team, we have a postdoc position available on MMC modelling and control for HVDC stability studies. More info:

Power electronic converters are seen as essential building blocks for the energy transition. Amongst others, they act as a gateway between traditional AC transmission systems and HVDC connections. The recent appearance of harmonic interactions between these AC transmission systems on the one hand and converters with their fast-acting controls on the other hand is raising awareness to the fact that present-day system studies are not always able to adequately reveal this problem due to existing modelling paradigms.

We are searching for an experienced researcher to strengthen our team on MMC converter modelling and control for HVDC system stability studies. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in both public-funded, as well as industry-funded R&D projects.

The responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher will be:

To contribute to the research conducted in the group: directly and/or through (co-)supervision of junior researchers
To publish research outcomes of research in top academic journals and conferences

To represent the group in projects and with industry

To contribute to the research roadmap "towards HVDC grids"

As the ideal candidate:

You have obtained the PhD degree in electrical engineering with a solid background in power system (and HVDC) modelling for control applications, from a reputable institute.

You have obtained outstanding scientific contributions during your PhD, e.g. shown through publications in relevant top academic journals.

You are communicative and motivated to work in a team with activities centered on HVDC systems and to assist in supporting the work of junior experts in the research team.

You have experience with relevant power system simulation software, with a focus on the use of power electronics in the system. Working knowledge of an EMT-type software is considered a plus.

Experience with real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments is considered as an advantage.

You are able to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus.

You are willing to occasionally travel in the framework of the project.

We offer an exciting job in one of the leading research institutes in the field. HVDC technology is receiving significant attention from both academia and industry. This postdoctoral project allows you to work on a highly timely research topic:

in an inspiring research environment, within an international team of enthusiastic colleagues.

with state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure (

where you can engage in research collaborations and participate at international conferences and be involved in expert groups.

with different projects for industry and in public R&D projects, with industry involvement.

We offer a full-funded post-doc position with multiple benefits (health insurance, access to university infrastructure and sports facilities, etc.) .

The main work location is the EnergyVille Campus of KU Leuven, located in Genk (Belgium).
