Postdoctoral Position: Computational Geodynamics and Software Engineering

Job #JPF03269

  • Mathematical and Physical Sciences - EARTH AND PLANETARY SCIENCES

Recruitment Period

Open November 7th, 2019 through Sunday, Jan 26, 2020 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time)

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral appointments at the Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG) at the University of California, Davis. The positions are expected to contribute to the development and support of numerical modeling codes in geodynamics and towards conducting independent research. CIG supports the development and dissemination of software for geophysics and related fields by supporting the development of open source, community codes and maintaining the infrastructure for its reuse.

We seek proposals for innovative, original, and feasible software engineering and/or software development projects that complement and/or improve our current practices. CIG supports communities in computational science, dynamo, education, long-term tectonics, mantle convection, multiphysics, seismology, and short-term crustal dynamics. Active areas of interest include the application and / or development of new tools for visualization and complex workflows, containerization, outreach and education, reproducibility; significant expansion of an existing CIG code; or the advancement of an existing non-CIG code for inclusion into the CIG community. The successful applicants are expected to collaborate with the relevant members of CIG headquarters, the CIG community, and relevant outside communities. We encourage you to contact us before applying.

These positions are expected to participate in ongoing CIG Headquarters’ activities including maintaining the community software infrastructure, participating in outreach, and advising community members on software donations. The positions will therefore provide the opportunity to develop a reputation as the next generation of computational geophysicists and have interactions with a diverse set of communities.

We anticipate two appointments each for one year, renewable for another year depending on performance. The annual salary range for this position is $50,760 to $61,308 depending on post-doctoral research experience. This is a full-time appointment with benefits. This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit.
