Postdoctoral Position in Empirical Digital Ethics with Focus on Cybersecurity

We are offering an interdisciplinary postdoctoral position in Empirical Digital Ethics with a focus on Cybersecurity. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to research focusing on addressing ethical and legal challenges when securing the digital infrastructure. The position is advertised by the Digital Ethics Lab of the Digital Society Initiative, University of Zurich (UZH). Funding is provided for three years by the Swiss National Science Foundation within the National Research Program 77 "Digital Transformation". In case of a successful application of a Horizon 2020 project on similar topics, degree of employment and duration can be extended.

Your responsibilities

The research projects involve cutting-edge topics in digital ethics. The researcher is expected to collaborate with legal scholars as well as technical experts from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Switzerland's competence centre for cybersecurity. The project aims to (a) address governance gaps resulting from the mismatch of technological and legislation speed in order to increase trust in cybersecurity; to (b) obtain data by two survey addressing Critical Infrastructure CERTs and cybersecurity professionals and to (c) establish a governance framework on ethical and legal aspects of cybersecurity for relevant cybersecurity stakeholders in Switzerland such as law enforcement agencies, CERTs, risk and compliance teams and security vendors. The research will support key elements of the National Cybersecurity Strategy of Switzerland by research that provides data, insights and recommendations.

Your profile

  • PhD in (empirical) ethics, psychology, or a related field
  • Technical knowledge and/or experience related to the domain of cybersecurity
  • Experience in empirical research methods; in particular conception and implementation of surveys
  • Good command of basic statistical data analysis
  • A few publications in top-tier international journals
  • Team spirit, commitment and pleasure in working with PostDocs and PhD students in the fields of computer science, philosophy and information law
  • Very good command of English, written and spoken
  • At least passive knowledge in German is required; knowledge in French would be an asset
