Role Description

Department

The BBSRC IB Catalyst funded DETOX project, run from the Department of Biology at the University of York, is looking to recruit an experienced software developer to continue building our online bioinformatics platform for analysing and integrating multi-omics datasets (MORF). The position will provide maternity cover and will start as soon as possible to allow knowledge transfer.

Role

This exciting opportunity will require a combination of skills in bioinformatics, software programming and web development to deliver a tool capable of interrogating complex datasets and providing novel conclusions. We’re looking for an enthusiastic, adaptable team member to continue to develop engaging interactive data visualisations, improve our microbial ‘stress viewer’ and prepare the software for commercialisation. You will engage with our user community to incorporate user feedback and suggested data solutions. In addition to programming, you will support funding applications and promote the software to potential new users.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, computational biology or related area of microbiology where programming was an important component of the project (awarded or approaching completion)
  • Good knowledge of key omics technologies and the types of data produced
  • Knowledge of database design principles and experience developing applications using them
  • Experience of programming with Python and R. Web development with JavaScript also desirable.
  • Highly developed communication skills, both for engaging effectively with a wide ranging audience, and for collaboration with MORF users during the development of new features.

Interview date: Early March

For informal enquiries: please contact Vicki Springthorpe on 01904 328818 or alternatively email biol-dmthub@york.ac.uk

This post is available on a fixed term basis until 30 March 2021.
