Postdoctoral Researcher, Human Perception-Based Planning and Filtering

Position description

A four-year postdoctoral researcher position is available in the confluence of robotics and virtual reality in the new PERCEPT project funded by the Academy of Finland in the research group of Professor Steven LaValle at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to fundamental research efforts in robotics. Targeted applications of interest include telepresence, virtual reality, comfortable immersion and interaction in panoramas, interface design, human-robot interaction, comfortable and effective locomotion in virtual reality, and the promotion of well-being through wearable display technology.

The earliest possible starting date is October 1, 2019, but the position will remain open until filled. A six-month trial period will be effective at the beginning of the four-year contract.

 

Required qualifications and assessment

The successful applicant must hold a doctoral degree in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Candidates whose doctoral thesis has been submitted for review by September 30, 2019 are eligible to apply. In addition to core background in robotics and automation, experience in the following areas will considered favorably: dynamical systems, control theory, filtering, motion planning, HCI, and perceptual psychology.

Fluency in both written and spoken English is required, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills. Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, acquiring funding, and teaching are considered merits. When assessing the qualifications, aspects to be considered include expertise on the research field and methodology, scientific publications, supervision experience, and activity in the scientific community.

 

Salary and benefits

The salary will be based on demand level 5-6 of the salary chart of teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). In practice, the salary will be roughly 3500–4500 € per month, depending on qualifications, performance, and experience. The employed person will be insured by the university and provided occupational healthcare. Finland is known as a country with a high quality of life and good healthcare system.

4) List of publications formatted according to the template of the Academy of Finland (https://www.aka.fi/en/funding/apply-for-funding/az-index-of-application-guidelines/list-of-publications/), so that the six (6) publications most relevant to the position are clearly marked.

5) Contact information of two persons, who may be asked to give a statement on the candidate.
