To fulfil the national needs and interests of a modern society the University awards a significant number of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications with a large group of them developed in partnerships with the University of Lancaster (the UK University of the Year 2018, and one of the top 1% of the academic institutions globally). To date, Sunway University has drawn more than 26,000 students from over 60 countries to its vibrant, 880,000-square-feet campus. Supported by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, the University has invested in excess of RM400 million in its infrastructure and continues to expand its teaching and learning, research, and recreation spaces and facilities.

The University now seeks a Professor and Chair of Electronic and Electrical Engineering to take it forward in the next phase of its growth and maturity towards development and introduction of high quality Engineering disciplines.

The School of Science and Technology

Sunway University has six schools, of which the School of Science and Technology (SST) is the second largest (around 1800 students as of 2019). The School comprises three academic departments (Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Computing and Information Systems, and Department of Psychology) and five research units (Research Centre for Virus and Vaccine Research, Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation, Research Centre for Crystalline Materials, Research Centre for Nano-Materials and Energy Technology, and Graphene and Advanced 2D Materials Research Group). It represents the main research body of the University with around 300 refereed and indexed journal and conference publications, and some USD 500,000 – 1,000,000 of research and infrastructure funding awarded annually.

Development and introduction of several engineering undergraduate and postgraduate programs are now initiated as a part of the ambitious growth plan till 2025, and beyond. The Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) is among the first undergraduate programs to be introduced. In addition to addressing the high demand for qualified engineering graduates in Malaysia and overseas, the program will help to further expand research activities carried by the School in a number of important emerging topics of Electronics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Communications, Robotics, and other relevant fields in order to strengthen its advanced standing in the country and internationally.

The Role

This is a post of a high importance within SST reporting to the Dean of the School. The Professor and Chair will provide expertise, experience, leadership, and direct contribution to rapid development, approval, professional institution accreditation, and introduction of the new academic program in EEE. This will be done in close cooperation with colleagues from the relevant academic and administrative units of Sunway University, external academic partners including staff of the Lancaster University, industry advisors and collaborators, professional institutions, and appropriate government regulatory bodies officials. Once the new program is introduced, the Professor and Chair will provide effective management of the staff associated with the Electronic and Electrical Engineering discipline, overseeing program delivery, teaching quality, research and enterprise missions, promoting and guiding its ongoing development, while leading productive and fruitful interaction within the wider University as well as with external organizations, and ensuring that its budget and resources are well managed. There should be a strong focus on industry relevance and on building links with leading national and international high-tech companies in Electronics, Automation, Communications, Computer and Electrical Engineering, and other relevant fields. The objective of this appointment is to bring in a leader to help building the future Department of Engineering at the School into one that will fast achieve a reputable international ranking.

Key Responsibilities of the Post

The Professor and Chair serves as the chief advocate for advancing the mission and goals of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering discipline area within the School of Science and Technology. The Professor and Chair will deliver creative and dynamic leadership for undergraduate and postgraduate programs associated with EEE fields and will serve as a member of the SST management team.

Major/Essential Duties and Requirements of the Successful Appointee

Fostering excellence in teaching, service, and scholarly/research activities in the discipline area of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and associated fields.
Leading by setting an example of excellence in new EEE programs design and development, teaching, service, and scholarly/creative activities as well as providing management and administration where required and assigned.
Leading development of a full spectrum of relevant Teaching and Learning (T&L) materials for new undergraduate and post graduate programs in EEE as well as setting up the relevant laboratory facilities.
Working effectively to seek and maintain required accreditations by the relevant statutory and professional accreditation bodies.
Advancing research activities in EEE discipline area, and fostering close links with SST and external research centers and partners in the relevant fields.
Assisting in identifying and encouraging appropriate professional development opportunities for academic and research staff as well as students.
Leading strategic developments in the EEE discipline, setting and achieving short- and long-term goals consistent with the SST and University plans and indicators for the period to 2025, and beyond.
Promoting the positive image of the Sunway University, School, EEE discipline, and the relevant academic programmes.
Meeting individual needs of staff associated with the EEE discipline by being knowledgeable regarding their professional interests, accomplishments, strengths in teaching, scholarly/creative activities, administrative service, and professional development.
Recruiting and retaining high quality, experienced, and motivated staff associated with the Electronic and Electrical Engineering discipline area.
Planning and implementing staff development activities, conducting performance appraisal of the allocated staff.
Executing assigned supervision, administrative and management responsibilities in efficient and timely manner while making decisions based on data.
Preparing plans for allocation of EEE related resources and responsibilities within the School in an effective and equitable manner enabling to meet the needs of students and the Electronic and Electrical Engineering programmes.
On-going monitoring and updating academic subject schedules and rotations.
Addressing and fairly handling student appeals, providing guidance, counseling and helping in personal, ethical, moral, and overall character development of the students.
Promoting diversity and facilitating work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and ability to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
Accepting the role of Head of Engineering Department as well as other tasks and activities if/when assigned by the Dean.

Required Education and Experience

PhD of DSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (or closely relevant fields) from a reputable institution of higher learning.
Established high quality scholarly research publication record commensurate to Professor at a university with recognized international standing in research.
Proven record of successful applications and obtaining competitive research grant funding.
Academic leadership experience, e.g., as a programme leader, head of a discipline team, leader of a research unit, etc.
Demonstrated knowledge of matters, experience, on-going membership (preferably at a senior level), and active involvement to activities of the relevant professional engineering institutions and societies.
Familiarity with curriculum and programme development principles, processes and practices.
Experience and knowledge of new program approval and accreditation practices, in particular, by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA), and Board of Engineering of Malaysia (BEM), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
Demonstrated leadership and management abilities and skills in academic and/or industrial settings in the relevant subject fields.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Continuing self-development through upgrading qualification, experience and professional activities.

Preferred Education and Experience

Commitment to effective teaching, professional and scholarly research, as well as active service to the University, School, and community at large.
Ability to successfully perform multi-tasking while carrying out activities and duties in cooperation with colleagues and partners.
Experience in handling high-value funded projects will be an added advantage.
Industry experience will be of a significant plus.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Professional engineering qualification/registration recognized in Malaysia and internationally (e.g., PEng, CEng, CPEng, etc.).
