Job Synopsis

The Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, University of Limerick, invites applications for the new permanent Full Professor of Sustainable Electrical Engineering.

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD in electrical engineering or a cognate discipline, with postdoctoral teaching and research experience and relevant specialisation.

  • Demonstrate an exceptional record in research, teaching, and academic leadership in sustainable electrical engineering.

  • Show a strong publication record in leading international journals and a proven ability to secure competitive research funding.

  • Have experience supervising postgraduate students and excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

  • Bring a collaborative spirit that contributes to the research culture of the department.

Research Focus:
The appointee will demonstrate research excellence and international standing in one or more areas, including:

  • Power systems

  • Control and automation

  • Signal processing

  • Microelectronics

  • Embedded systems

  • Renewable energy systems (e.g., electrical and power engineering for battery technologies)

  • High-frequency communications

They will be expected to lead and grow a vibrant research agenda, attract significant research funding, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations both within the university and with external partners across academia, industry, and government.


Role & Responsibilities

The Full Professor of Sustainable Electrical Engineering will:

  • Strengthen and complement the Bernal Institute’s energy-related activities, leading the development of environmentally friendly, sustainable electrical energy solutions.

  • Drive interdisciplinary collaboration across Bernal research areas, including materials science, biomedical engineering, healthcare technologies, and related fields.

  • Contribute to sustainable and marine energy research within the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS).

  • Provide strategic leadership in the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in electrical and electronic engineering.

  • Deliver high-quality teaching, curriculum innovation, and promote student engagement and experiential learning aligned with industry needs.

  • Supervise and mentor postgraduate students and early-career academics.

  • Represent the university nationally and internationally, engage with professional bodies, and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in STEM.

Experience in industry collaboration, technology transfer, or commercialisation activities will be considered an advantage.


Candidate Requirements

Applicants should:

  • Hold a PhD in Sustainable Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • Have an outstanding track record of scholarly publications, research leadership, and attracting large-scale research funding.

  • Demonstrate teaching excellence and a strong record of postgraduate supervision.

  • Possess excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
