Research Assistant/Associate in Semiconductor Devices
University of Cambridge Electrical Engineering Division
United Kingdom

A position exists for a postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to work on the development of nanomaterial-based (opto)electronic devices. The role holder will join the Electrical Engineering Division under the supervision of Prof Hannah Joyce and Dr Jack Alexander-Webber.

The successful individual will join a project that aims to develop new high-throughput device integration, characterisation, and analysis techniques to generate large multi-technique characterisation datasets of nanomaterials, such as semiconductor nanowires, graphene, and two-dimensional semiconductors.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The successful candidate will be engaged in:

(i) Fabricating and characterising (opto)electronic devices based on arrays of nanomaterials.
(ii) Designing and optimising high-throughput (opto)electronic characterisation techniques which may include automated probing, or integration of nanomaterial devices with CMOS, readout circuits, or multiplexing circuits.
(iii) Characterising nanomaterials based on device measurements and other complementary characterisation techniques such as optical spectroscopy, generating and analysing multi-technique datasets.
(iv) Writing and publishing journal papers on experimental findings.
(v) Playing an active role in the day-to-day supervision of students involved in the project.
(vi) Working cooperatively within a team of academics, researchers and postgraduate students at Cambridge, and collaborating with industrial partners and other UK-based and international universities.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

i) A PhD (or close to obtaining a PhD) in Materials Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Nanotechnology.
ii) Track record of authoring high quality academic publications in field of (opto)electronic device development or semiconductors/materials characterisation.
iii) Experience and skills in nanostructured material or semiconducting material device fabrication and characterisation.
iv) Interpersonal and leadership skills as required for interdisciplinary collaborative research project.
v) Motivation and enthusiasm for curiosity-driven research.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges:
Research Assistant: £27,929-£32,348
Research Associate: £34,308-£42,155

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 15 months or until 31 July 2024, whichever comes soonest, in the first instance.
