Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London.  The position is funded by the European Research Council. You will be working on the Stochastic Transport in Upper Ocean Dynamics (STUOD) ERC Synergy Grant 2020. The STUOD project aims to deliver new capabilities for assessing variability and uncertainty in upper ocean dynamics.

Duties and responsibilities

You will take the lead on developing and computationally implementing stochastic parameterisation models to explore and test new theories related to the STUOD project. In addition, you will be involved in the theoretical development of stochastic variational models of ocean dynamics. You will also have the opportunity to develop an independent research project which supports the aims of this grant.

Essential requirements

You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in the area of theoretical modelling with nonlinear Partial Differential Equations for Stochastic Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) or closely related topic.

You must also meet the following criteria:

  • Experience in Stochastic Parameterisation for Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD)
  • Experience with Parallel Computing using Fortran or C/C++
  • Experience in giving talks at internationally recognised conferences and workshops
  • Experience in writing research papers in Stochastic Parameterisation for GFD
  • A track record of independent research in applications of variational principles in GFD
  • A track record of independent research in Stochastic Parameterisation for GFD
  • A strong interest and knowledge of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations for GFD
  • Knowledge of Data Assimilation techniques
  • Expertise in Rough Path Theory

Further information

The position is fixed term for 36 months. The expected start date is 1stOctober 2020. Please note that the maximum salary on appointment can be £40,215 per annum.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
