Research Engineer in Bayesian Forecasting Model-Informed Precision Dosing Software Tool
Catholic University of Leuven

The research of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy is situated in the broad field of clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy and focuses on the efficient and safe use of medicines. The research ranges from first-in-man studies in healthy volunteers and clearly defined patient populations to post-marketing research in specific groups such as critically ill, children, pregnant women, cancer patients and the elderly. The division has an extensive international network and works closely with other departments and (inter)national universities, government and pharmaceutical industry.

You will be responsible for the development and validation of a user-friendly (full) Bayesian forecasting software tool for MIPD (incl. application programming interface (API)). This activity is part of the multidisciplinary collaboration between the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology &  Pharmacotherapy, Therapeutic & Diagnostic Antibodies, PharmAbs and Drug Delivery & Disposition, internationally renowned research groups collaborating on therapeutic drug monitoring and model-informed dose-finding of biological and antimicrobial drugs. At the University Hospitals Leuven, we focus on applying Bayesian forecasting to the industrially and societally relevant dosing problems within the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit, the Children's hospital and Intensive Care Unit and often in collaboration with industrial partners.

In our research group, there are several ongoing applied MIPD projects.  You will be expected to contribute to these projects by supporting the development and validation of a (full) Bayesian forecasting software tool for MIPD. You will be working with PhD students and postdocs who will be using the software tool in prospective clinical trials at UZ Leuven.

In addition to supporting the prospective precision dosing trials within the research group, you will also have the autonomy to work on your own research interests in collaboration with the other members of our group.

If you share our strong interest in the topic of MIPD, and you have:

  • a Master and/or PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar;
  • a solid background in mathematics (e.g., simulation of stochastic processes and/or optimisation);

  • experience with C/C++ and Fortran for programming of scientific software;

  • an analytical mind and strong technical skills;

  • a team player attitude and the capability to work in an international research team consisting of pharmacists, clinicians, pharmacometricians, and biostatisticians;

  • excellent proficiency in Dutch and English, as well as good communication skills, both oral and written,

  • optionally some industry experience.

then you may be the colleague we are looking for.

  • A position as a software developer within one of Europe's leading research universities.
  • An exciting international and multicultural working environment at KU Leuven and in the University Hospitals Leuven

  • A supportive and collaborative team of researchers in which you can develop know-how and expertise in state-of-the-art MIPD.

  • The opportunity to build up research and innovation skills that are essential for a future career in research and development, both in an industrial and academic context.

  • Benefit from our network of academic and industrial contacts.

  • Funding is secured for two years. The initial offer will be a one-year appointment, of which the renewal depends on the progress and ability to track best-of-breed technology, architect, and develop efficient application flow infrastructure. We expect opportunities to apply for funding for an additional period. We will provide all the necessary support for such an application.

  • A competitive salary.
