Job description

We seek a Research Fellow in Audio Processing to work full-time in CVSSP in interactive audio-visual media production on the InnovateUK-funded Polymersive project, which is in collaboration with BBC R&D and other industrial partners. The 12-month post is to investigate object-based spatial audio capture techniques for integration with 3D video to create six degree-of-freedom (6DoF) audio-visual content, which responds to the consumer's rotational and translational movements.

The project builds on the success of CVSSP's recent research projects in spatial audio (S3A, and 3D video (ALIVE, REACT). This project represents the first academic research collaboration with both audio and video teams at the BBC, which provides access to tools and creatives together with high production values.

The post will involve the application of robust audio signal processing techniques for localisation, tracking and data association with microphone arrays, integrated with light-field video cameras, alongside more conventional sound recording equipment. This information with provide the metadata describing the 3D position of sound sources and the variation over time of these audio objects.

The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD in spatial audio, microphone-array signal processing, audio-visual machine learning, robust signal processing or a related area, with an excellent mathematical and programming background. Experience of and enthusiasm for teamworking with other project partners to implement technology demonstrators are desirable, including BBC R&D and the creative industries.

With an international reputation for excellence and impact, CVSSP is probably the largest audio-visual research centre in the UK. This world-class research environment brings together research on computer vision, graphics, machine listening and signal processing, with around 170 members comprising academics, research fellows and PhD students. The centre is supported as a national hub for research in audio-visual media and maintains strong collaborative links, internally with other parts of the Electrical & Electronic Engineering Department and the Institute of Sound Recording in the Department of Music & Media, and externally with the UK creative industries (e.g., film, games and broadcast).
