This is an exciting opportunity to join the visionary research team within the Propulsion Futures Beacon of Excellence, at the UoN, which aims to drive the discovery and translation of new materials, components and technologies to attain innovative electrified propulsion systems in a new age of sustainable transport. The successful candidate will work across Engineering and Science faculties in Advanced Materials, Power electronics, Physics and Chemistry. They will have expertise in PVD coating deposition across multiple platforms such as multiple target magnetron and reactive sputtering and MBE. They will also be expected to integrate with other coating activities within the beacon in other physical and chemical deposition techniques to meet the visions of the beacon. In particular they will be expected to develop unique single, multilayer and nanostructured coatings for applications in propulsion futures such as insulating but thermally conducting structures and other functional coatings, pushing TRL of devices and improving efficiency of electric machines and systems. They would also be expected to work in other beacon areas such as energy generation and storage involving thin film deposition and extend their portfolio of interest.

Candidates should have a PhD in relevant subject area such as Materials, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering with a proven track record in Physical Vapour deposition techniques and innovative thin films or coatings. They must be familiar with a wide range of relevant characterisation techniques. Due to the location of the various complex magnetron and reactive sputtering and MBE units across campus then a proven ability to learn new skills and implement them rapidly is vital. The successful candidate can look forward to working in a well-resourced environment with state-of-the-art facilities within the Propulsion Futures Beacon, and to developing additional beneficial transferable skills.

The successful candidate will develop an independent role. Mentoring and career development for the appointee will be offered as necessary by the team within the Beacon.

This full-time post is fixed-term for a period of 24 months and is available from 01 January 2020. Job share arrangements may be considered.
