Researcher in Mathematics, Computer Vision and Machine Learning

Lunds universitet, LTH, Matematikcentrum, LTH

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

Subject description

Matematics LTH and numerical analysis are looking for candidates for (one to two) research positions within computer vision and machine learning. The positions will be associated to the Mathematical imaging group and the research of the applicant will therefore be expected to contribute to one or several of the groups main research areas:

  • Machine learning with a focus on design of computer programs that can learn from examples. The group works on basic theory, optimization and algorithmic design. Many applications are industrially motivated.
  • Methods on global optimization, with a focus on large scale problems relevant to 3D reconstruction and scene understanding. Examples of relevant problems are motion synchronization and low rank approximation.
  • Solving systems of multivariate polynomial equations. These are common in for example SLAM-systems, where they need to be solved multiple times, with high demands on speed and accuracy. The group works on theory for polynomial solvers, often based on algebraic geometry, both with respect to specific applications and more general systems.
  • Medical image analysis, with applications within for example segmentation and classification using neural networks. The group has both ongoing and recurrent cooperations with Skånes University Hospital (SUS).

The applicant is assumed to conduct individual research, 50% ore more, and take an active part in the imaging group’s teaching and communication with surrounding society. In addition to tutoring and supervision of master theses and PhD students, the group currently gives four annual courses: Image analysis, Medical image analysis, Computer vision and Machine learning. In addition to this the group also administers the project course in applied mathematics twice per year. The applicant is assumed to be able to contribute to supervision, teaching and administration within some of these courses.

Work duties:

  • Depending of the strengths of the applicant the research may focus on one or several of the areas listed above, or possibly related areas.
  • Teaching, supervision of thesis work and PhD-projects and administration connected to this.
  • Communication and collaboration with surrounding society and industry, as well as work with the group’s web pages.
  • Opportunity for training in higher education teaching and learning.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within Computer vision and Machine learning.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • A strong mathematical background and programming skills.
  • In addition to PhD degree the applicant should have publications in subject relevant journals and conferences.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Scientific publications in leading computer vision or machine learning journals and conferences such as ICCV, CVPR, ECCV, NIPS, PAMI, IJCV and JMLR.
  • Previously received external research funding.
  • Experience of supervision and teaching.
  • Pedagogical merits..

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

The position is a fixed-term employment, two years.

Instructions on how to apply

Applications shall be written in English and be compiled into a PDF-file containing:

  • Résumé/CV with a list of publications and a descriptions of teaching activities, supervision and any pedagogical training.
  • A description of past research and future research interests (no more than three pages). The description should when relevant also relate to the research areas of the group, listed above.
  • Copy of the doctoral degree certificate and other certificates/grades that you wish to be considered.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
