Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Game Design’s activities are all located at Campus Gotland in Visby. The Department offers international and national study programmes in game design at Bachelor and Master degree level (first and second cycles respectively) and freestanding courses in game design, expression and game programming. The hub for research in game design as well as related areas is our Games & Society lab.

Particular areas that the department wants to strengthen through this recruitment are:

  • the transformative qualities of games and the process of design, and the intersection of games, play and health;
  • critical, participatory design and the intersection of technology and sustainable development;
  • an exploration of new forms of play through diverse, transdisciplinary perspectives and / or through various technologies;
  • International collaborations and project funding.

Duties: The position encompasses teaching courses in game design with both practical and theoretical orientation, personal research and course administration. Teaching includes course responsibility, supervision, examination and development work. The duties also require staying up to date with the subject area and other societal development relevant to the work at the university. Applicants must be prepared to participate in department and faculty level activities and accept departmental management responsibilities, such as Director of Studies or Prefect (Head of Department).

Eligibility requirements: Applicants are eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer if they have completed a doctorate in game design or other field relevant for the position. Applicants have demonstrated teaching skills and have completed relevant tertiary-level teacher training comprising ten weeks or have in some other way acquired equivalent proficiency; and have the general capabilities necessary to carry out in full the duties of the appointment. In special cases, the tertiary-level teacher training may be completed during the first two years of tenure.

The documented ability to teach in English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria: The assessment will focus on scientific, pedagogical and managerial/administrative qualifications, including leadership skills. In the ranking of eligible applicants, equal weight will be accorded to research and teaching competence. Teaching excellence and documented experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching at undergraduate and master's levels, as well as supervision and examination of degree papers, will be considered an advantage. Teaching quality is assessed and, as such, teaching ability should be well documented. A good ability to cooperate with others is of particular importance.

In addition to a game design focus, the candidate may have a background in fields such as: Interaction Design, Art, Health, Creative Coding, Critical Making, Theater, Performance Studies, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience or Psychology. Regarding the focus of the applicant’s research, it is expected that it clearly includes game design, be it digital or non-digital (including life action role playing games).

Additionally, the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to disseminate research and research results and development work will be appraised. The ability to disseminate research and development work is shown by popular science work, e.g. participation in educating the public, publication of writings in popular science and participation in the public discussions of issues of education and research.

Experience of managerial, administrative and organizational work and leadership is an important assessment criterium. This can be evidenced, e.g. through having acted as PI in research projects or a lead role (e.g. lead designer / producer in game development projects), a proven track record of organizing and leading large scale events (e.g. life action role playing games, conferences etc.), building communities and / or having demonstrable experience in areas such as conflict management and team leadership.
