We are now seeking an assistant professor, associate professor or professor in the field of Power Electronics.

The position is placed in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. The Electrical Engineering Unit of the faculty is a hub of expertise with roughly 150 faculty and staff members, of which 16 professors and 7 tenure track professors. We confer about 100 master’s degrees and 12-15 doctoral degrees on an annual basis. Our teaching and research activities are based on a profound understanding of electrical and electromagnetic phenomena and their modelling and applications. We work in close collaboration with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community. We also offer an excellent research infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratories.
 
  Our areas of expertise are:

  • electronics and embedded systems
  • wireless communications and communication networks
  • radio positioning and sensing
  • electrical energy engineering and smart grids
  • power electronics and electromechanics

Specifically in power electronics, our mainfocus has been on the modeling and analysis of grid-connected converters, battery systems, and modern control methods for electrical drives and power electronic converters. 

 

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished researcher who will be an active and innovative co-builder of our research and teaching in power electronics. We broadly seek candidates at different career levels and  with interests in all areas of power electronics. The final profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise and career level.

In this position you will be expected to: 

  • pursue and supervise scientific research in the field,
  • lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision
  • seek, secure and manage research funding
  • demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders, such as industrial partners

 

Requirements

Assistant Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence  
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

Associate Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity.

Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 
  • track record of winning external research funding  
  • track record of international scholarly activity

We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns with the strategy of Tampere University and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and describe how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. Industrial experience or experience of industrial collaboration will be considered an advantage. 

 

We offer

Initial appointment as an assistant professor and associate professor will be for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease your transition to a tenured position. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,200/month for an assistant professor, from €4,600 to €4,900/month for an associate professor and from €5,600 to €5,800 EUR/month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.

Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited to Tampere University for an interview and may undergo an aptitude assessment. They will also undergo a review by external experts and may be required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.
