Tenured academic staff in the area of Machine learning for distributed environments


The position will be embedded within the IDLab Antwerp research group (www.idlab.uantwerpen.be). IDLab performs fundamental and applied research on internet technologies and distributed intelligence. Within the distributed intelligence track, we focus on novel fundamental machine learning solutions (with a particular focus on deep learning), which can be embedded in distributed environments of any kind (e.g., Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, agent-based systems, etc.). IDLab has a unique research infrastructure (e.g., distributed edge computing testbeds) used in numerous national and international collaborations. IDLab is both part of the University of Antwerp and the research centre imec. The University of Antwerp is one of the major universities in Belgium. It ranks 15th in the Young University Ranking 2018 of Times Higher Education. The research centre imec is the world-leading R&D and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies.


Job description

  • You will teach in the Bachelor and Master programs Computer Science and possibly service courses in other programs. In our programs, there is a strong link between research and education. The exact courses will be determined together with the education team. A typical education load is 24 ECTS credits. Lab sessions are managed by teaching assistants.

  • You will expand the scientific research in the area of machine learning which has relevance for distributed environments such as Internet of Things, robotics, human computer interaction, distributed software systems, Multi-Agent Systems, wearables, etc.

  • You will acquire and manage external funding (national and international).

  • You will supervise doctoral students.

  • You will offer scientific services: among others you take part in committees of the department, faculty and university. You will engage in the management of the research group (IDLab Antwerp). You will represent IDLab in external organizations and networks, nationally as well as internationally. Amongst others, you will act as a program committee member of international conferences and workshops and as an editor of journals. You will participate in the IDLab research activities within imec.


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Engineering or Science.

  • You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.

  • You have the ability to translate research results into industrial applications.

  • You can present an outstanding academic research output in the broader field of the domain of this vacancy through metrics such as scientific publications, awards, etc.

  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • As a course unit coordinator, you are able to demonstrate that you master the language of instruction at the CEFR level C1 before the beginning of the module(s). As a course unit coordinator, you also master the language of administration, Dutch, or you are willing to gradually learn the language up to the CEFR level B2. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members by offering them an integration programme and provides adequate language tracks for course unit coordinators within the framework of the Flemish statutory language regulations.


We offer

  • either a full-time position as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment in the tenure track for a term of five years. This position will lead to an immediate permanent appointment as a senior lecturer if the performance is assessed favorably on the basis of previously fixed and publicly announced evaluation criteria;

  • or a full-time position as a senior lecturer or higher, generally entailing a permanent appointment. In the case of a first appointment to the corps of academic personnel (ZAP), the university board may proceed to a temporary appointment for a period not exceeding three years. This position will lead to a permanent appointment if the performance is assessed favourably;

  • the date of appointment will be October 1st 2019;

  • a gross monthly salary ranging for lecturer from € 4.255,06 - € 6.272,13; and for senior lecturer from € 4.872,61 - € 7.654,80;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
